CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The United Way of Greater Clarksville, the Clarksville-Montgomery Public Library System and Electrolux teamed up to give away 400 free air conditioning units.

As we approach triple digit temperatures this week, people are definitely feeling it.

One Clarksville resident, Charles Reeves, said the heat has been almost unbearable without adequate air conditioning.

“With God’s help we can make it,” Reeves said.

Reeves said he’s lived in Clarksville for 50 years and said he’s never seen it hot like this.

“Everything’s been different, more mosquitoes, more everything and especially more heat,” Reeves said.

Reeves is one of the many people who got a free air conditioning unit on Tuesday afternoon.

“We had a used unit but we also had fans and everything but this is a big step forward,” Reeves said.

Some even got emotional as they got their unit. The United Way of Greater Clarksville, executive director, Valerie Guzman, said that’s what it’s all about.

”It’s why I do this work,” Guzman said.

Guzman said she likes to make someone’s day better.

“If I could get them to do one more step they’re already getting better,” Guzman said. “So that’s why I do this work so they can have that one more moment of better.”

As for Reeves, he said thanks to the new unit. Reeves said he hopes it’ll bring his family closer.

”[We’ll] probably get along better cause you know heat brings tension,” Reeves said.
